In the winter of 1950, the American president told reporters that the atomic bomb had always been under active consideration. China had no bomb and no means of retaliation. Starting from the war in Korea, this book asks a larger question: why did a civilization that grew by hunting stop here for the first time, and what allowed a civilization rooted in the land to refuse to be prey?

Korea 1950 is about the first refusal: the weak refusing to be prey. This book takes on the harder second one: when a people becomes strong enough to hunt, what makes it refuse? A person who only obeys, when he stops, is still obeying; only an independent person, anchored in conscience, can truly refuse. The book brings Christianity and ancient Chinese thought into conversation — from Luther’s “my conscience is captive to the Word of God” to Wang Yangming’s “innate knowing is the principle of heaven” — in search of a restraint that does not depend on fear. The demand falls on every power that is strong today, China included.
